For those planning to climb Mt. Fuji, here is the latest information as of May 2026, shared from the perspective of a local mountain guide.

Please always check the official website for the most up-to-date and official information:

The information on this page is provided for general reference only. We are not responsible for any accidents, injuries, or other issues that may occur as a result of climbing based on this information. Please make sure to check the latest weather, trail conditions, and official route information yourself, and enjoy your climb at your own responsibility.

1. When is the best season to climb Mt. Fuji? Are there seasons when you should not climb?

In short: the suitable season for climbing to the summit is only about two months, from July 1 to September 10.

The trails above the 5th Station, leading to the summit, are officially open from July 1 to September 10. This is the official Mt. Fuji climbing season. During this period, mountain huts and toilets are open, and official rescue and safety systems are in place. With the right preparation, even beginner hikers can enjoy the climb during this season.

Please note that at the beginning of the climbing season, from July 1 to July 9, some parts of the summit area are not open. Specifically, the crater trail around the summit, known as Ohachi-meguri, is usually not yet open. However, from July 1 to July 9, you can still reach the summit area of the most popular Yoshida Trail.

From around April to June and September to November, it is possible to enjoy trekking on the lower part of Mt. Fuji, from the 1st Station to the 5th Station. However, climbing to the summit outside the official summer season is extremely dangerous and is not recommended. Unless you have extensive winter mountaineering experience and are accompanied by a properly qualified guide, attempting to reach the summit outside the official season can be very risky.

2. Are there permits or limits on the number of climbers?

During the official climbing season from July 1 to September 10, restrictions are in place for hikers entering the area between the 5th Station and the summit.

On the most popular route, the Yoshida Trail, there is a daily limit of 4,000 climbers. In addition, the gate is closed from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., so climbers cannot start from the 5th Station during those hours.

However, if you have a reservation at a mountain hut, you are exempt from both the daily climber limit and the gate closing time restrictions. In other words, if you have a mountain hut reservation, you do not need to worry about the 4,000-person daily limit or the 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. gate closure. We strongly recommend making your mountain hut reservation in advance.

Even if you have a mountain hut reservation, your equipment will still be checked at the 5th Station.

You must have the following three items:

  • Warm clothing, such as a proper hiking jacket

  • Two-piece rain gear, both jacket and pants. A poncho alone is not accepted.

  • Proper hiking shoes

If you do not have these items, the rangers may not allow you to pass through the gate. However, if you forget something or do not have the right gear, you can usually purchase or rent the necessary items at shops around the 5th Station.

3. Check the official information

For the latest official details, please check the Official Website for Mt. Fuji Climbing:
